Unionopterus unit (Carboniferous of Kazakhstan)

Where: Karaganda, Kazakhstan (49.8° N, 73.1° E)

• Paleocoordinates: 4.4° S, 57.1° E (Wright 2013)

• coordinate based on political unit

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Karaganda Formation, Visean (346.7 - 330.9 Ma)

• Core at K2 Horizon, shales covering stratum K4 1(Chenychev). Probably same as Simonim (1948): "core of well No. 966 at a depth of 200-235 m, at Promyshlennoye section in ... the K2 horizon above the K4 seam This horizon is the second horizon of the lower Karaganda formation, which belongs to the lower half of the Visean tier."

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; shale

• Simorim 1956: Paleontologically, the formation is characterized by the presence of abundant remains of plants and remains of lagoon, brackish water organisms and, possibly, of the freshwater type. While the flora is distributed~ and more or less unevenly over the entire thickness of the formation, the fauna is confined. mainly to a-defined horizons, especially in the lower parts of the suite.

Size class: macrofossils
