Napak XXXI (Miocene of Uganda)

Where: Karamoja, Uganda (2.1° N, 34.2° E: paleocoordinates 0.9° N, 32.0° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Iriri Member, Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• The sites occur in two different stratigraphic levels: Napak XXX and XXXI in the lower Member (Iriri Member) and Napak IV, V and XV in the upper Member (Napak Member) (Pickford et al., 1986; Senut, 2017).

Environment/lithology: fluvial; volcaniclastic sediments and tuff

• The gastropod fauna is less diversified in Napak XXX and XXXI but the presence of the genera Thapsia, Tholachatina (in Napak XXX) and Trochozonites supports a wooded and moist environment. Futhermore, the assemblage of the genus Edouardia, Burtoa and Tholachatina suggests a marked seasonality with alternating dry and wet seasons (Pickford, 2004).
• the Napak deposits contain abundant fossil remains, preserved in nephelinite-carbonatite tuffs. The Iriri Member consists primarily of fluvial deposits intercalated with eruptive sediments, containing fossil assemblages concentrated by water, with articulated and partial skeleton (Pickford et al., 1986).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils
