Corehole UAT-8, sample R4090 H (Paleocene of Pakistan)

Where: Sindh, Pakistan (24.8° N, 68.0° E: paleocoordinates 8.9° S, 57.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• hand sample-level geographic resolution

When: Bara Formation (Ranikot Group), Paleocene (66.0 - 56.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; sandstone and siltstone

• The Bara Formation appears to represent largely nonmarine to brackish-water deposition.
• It consists mainly of sandstone, siltstone, shale, and coal. The detrital rocks are commonly carbonaceous and pyritic, and some detrital strata are varyingly calcareous, glauconitic, burrowed, and shelly.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: original sporopollenin

Collected by GPS and USGS

Collection methods: core

• Investigation by the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GPS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

•"The samples were processed using normal palynological techniques of HCl; HF; HNO3; short centrifugation with soapy water to remove fines; heavy liquid separation using a ZnCl2 liquid of 1.8 s.g.; staining with Bismarck brown; and screening on 10 µm sieves. Thes residues were mounted in glycerine jelly."
