Cardiola docens Comm., Ludlow, SW Sardinia (Silurian to of Italy)

Where: Sardinia, Italy (39.5° N, 8.5° E: paleocoordinates 61.7° S, 54.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: M. fritschi linearis zone, Fluminimaggiore Formation, Gorstian to Gorstian (427.4 - 423.0 Ma)

• In this study, isolated blocks were correlated on basis of contained conodonts. Fluminimaggiore Fm., Ludlow, fritschi linearis Biozone. All species save Mila parvula n. sp. also occur in Bohemia at same level.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; shelly/skeletal, gray wackestone and calcareous shale

• "Abundant nektobenthic orthocone cephalopod shells are characteristic and are commonly oriented by surface current activity...High density and diversity...Epibyssates dominant. The presence of infaunal forms...documents somewhat similar conditions to those in which the Slava cubicula-Cardiola docens Comm. flourished in the Prague Basin."
• General for this formation: "45-50 m thick alternation of black calcareous lenticular layers (peloid-cephalopod-ostracod wackestone-packstones grading to mudstones) with dark non calcareous pelites and shales. The upper part of the formation is characterized by more marly limestones and terminates with a crinoid bioclastic packstone horizon."

•For this community: "Mostly disarticulated shells occur in the grey to dark micritic and biomicritic or unsorted biodetrital limestones which form larger lenticular horizons within the sequence of calcareous shales."

Collection methods: Table 5 gives numerical abundances and inferred life habits of bivalves.
