Iron Cake site, northern flank of Macknight Bjerg (Triassic of Greenland)

Also known as area V

Where: Greenland (71.4° N, 22.6° W: paleocoordinates 45.4° N, 2.0° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Malmros Klint Formation (Fleming Fjord Group), Norian (228.0 - 208.5 Ma)

• uppermost part of Malmros Klint Fm.; according to the age model of Kent and Clemmensen

•(2021), this site has an age of 214 Ma (mid Norian)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine - large; red mudstone and bioturbated, calcareous sandstone

• "ephemeral lake system with intermittent wave reworking of the sand flats, indicative of a dry climate with seasonal rainfall"
• Upper unit is clay-rich. Member has composite cyclicity from basal siltstone through sandstones, the top being a well-developed paleosol that is enriched in calcite or dolomite and has well-developed dessication cracks. Sandstones are typically bioturbated with local calcite nodules. Flat-pebble conglomerates top the paleosols, with intraformational mud clasts and vertebrate fragments.

Size class: macrofossils
