AHe-3, George Dam, Chattahoochee River (Paleocene of the United States)

Where: Henry County, Alabama (30.7° N, 84.9° W: paleocoordinates 33.2° N, 65.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Clayton Formation, Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)

• Middle part of the Clayton, overlain by upper Clayton "earthy limestone". Beds 10 and 11 of Toulmin & LaMoreaux, 1963. Middle part of the Clayton Formation belongs to the upper part of NP2, and the mid-upper part of P1a (Schulte & Speijer 2009).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: open shallow subtidal; lithified, gray, sandy packstone

• Description of the lithology and fauna similar to the Turritella Rock bed, the unit that comes closest to coquinoidal. Schulte & Speijer 2009: Some cement within the Turritella Rock suggests occasional emersion. Planktonic foraminifera are nearly absent, suggesting very shallow environment. Sandy bioclastic packstone (e.g., Turritella Rock) accumulated in shallow, inner neritic settings.
• lithology described as light grey hard sandy coquinoidal limestone

Size class: mesofossils
