Burkes Garden (lower part) (Ordovician of the United States)

Also known as Cliffield Formation, Peery Limestone Member, Burkes Garden (lower part)

Where: Tazewell County, Virginia (37.1° N, 81.3° W: paleocoordinates 29.7° S, 61.6° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Peery Limestone Member (Cliffield Formation), Ashbyan (457.3 - 449.6 Ma)

• Ashbyan, lower part of Lophospira zone

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: black, gray, argillaceous limestone

• Dark bluish-gray to black fine-grained argillaceous limestone. Chert is abundant. Waxy seams of silty clay and streaks of waxy bituminous material project from weathered surfaces and give the rock a nodular appearance. One of its most distinctive features is the ash-gray weathering residue, in which many well-preserved ostracodes appear. Intercalated beds of calcilutyte are common near the top.

Size classes: macrofossils, microfossils
