Kukpowruk River 96-8 (Cretaceous to of the United States)

Also known as Kukpowruk River/Cape Lisburne floras

Where: western North Slope County, Alaska (68.9° N, 163.0° W: paleocoordinates 78.9° N, 97.6° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Corwin Formation, Albian to Albian (113.0 - 93.9 Ma)

• middle Albian to Cenomanian

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: crevasse splay; lithified sandstone and argillaceous, carbonaceous mudstone

• Description. The outcrop consists of a basal sandstone body several

•metres thick overlain by carbonaceous clay-dominated mudstone

•with abundant Pityophyllum leaves. This coarsens upwards to a

•yellow-weathering, grey, nodular and rippled siltstone and interbedded

•fine siltstones/claystones with abundant Equisetites rhizomes

•bearing large nodules, small Ginkgo leaves, rare Birisia alata and

•abundant Pityophyllum nordeskioldii and P. staratschinii. Podozamites

•is very rare with only one possible fragment found. These siltstones

•are overlain by thick, cross-bedded, channel sandstones at the base

•of which are clay rip-up clasts. The sandstones exhibit load structures

•and flutes and near the base sporadic well-rounded chert

•pebbles (longest axis 1–2 cm). Plant material is rare in the sandstones

•except for some Ginkgo leaves, tree trunks and branch wood.

•Most leaf material is highly fragmented. Marine fossils are absent.

•Interpretation. The carbonaceous mudstones are interpreted to

•represent quiet-water lacustrine and/or backswamp conditions

•some distance from the channel margins. Pityophyllum dominated

•the vegetation. The main plant-bearing sandstones represent crevasse

•splay deposits and overbank facies. Both mature and successional

•vegetation is represented. The sandstones represent filled

•river channels.
