Los Mansuetos (Miocene of Spain)

Also known as LM

Where: Aragon, Spain (40.3° N, 2.6° W: paleocoordinates 40.5° N, 3.2° W)

• coordinate stated in text

When: Alfambra Formation, Turolian (8.7 - 5.3 Ma)

• Middle Turolian, MN12. late Miocene. LM is above LM2 in the stratigraphic column.

Environment/lithology:

• 'A thick succession of red clays with some sand and conglomerate beds of the Peral Formation is followed by the Alfambra formation. The base of the Alfambra formation is a 2.5m thick bed of limestone mottled with gypsum. This is followed by 7.5m of brown-reddish clays and 7m of limy marl with abundant gypsum, 3m of calcareous gypsum and 0.6m of limestone, 15m of reddish sandy clay with some sand and conglomerate beds, 12.8m of gypsum and limestone with some clayey and marly intervals. One of these intervals corresponds to the Los Mansuetos 2 locality, it is a 0.3m thick lens of marl with pebbles of Neogene rocks, bone fragments and molluscs. Then follows a marly interval of 5.5m with on top a 40cm thick level of unsorted Neogene rock pebbles, bone fragments, debris of molluscs and plant remains, representing the classical locality of Los Mansuetos (LM). The section continues with about 43m of gypsum, limestones and poorly exposed clays.'
