Lynton Slates Site M (Devonian of the United Kingdom)

Where: England, United Kingdom (51.2° N, 3.8° W: paleocoordinates 29.1° S, 2.1° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lynton Slates Formation, Late/Upper Emsian (402.5 - 391.9 Ma)

• "probable late Emsian age"

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; gray, silty slate and gray sandstone

• interpreted as shallow-marine sediments, representing alternating periods of quieter water and more active deposition
• "The Lynton Slates comprise grey and dark grey silty slates with mudstones, siltstones and grey sandstones, usually fine to medium grained...In general the lower part...is sandy or silty, but with significant argilllites, and the upper part is predominantly argillaceous except at the top, where sandstones, possibly beach deposits, herald the transition into the overlying Hangman Grits..."
