Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, gray, silty limestone

• Near the top of the Bloyd shale in Washington County is the kessler limestone member, the thickness of which ranges from about 10 to 15 feet. It consists of gray shaly limestone, which weathers yellowish to reddish brown with streaks of lighter color, is locally sandy and oolitic and commonly forms low moss-covered bluffs in outcrop.
