When: Ettrick Formation, Chattian (28.1 - 23.0 Ma)
• "Interestingly, a tooth of the Oligocene shark Carcharodon angustidens. collected at Tailem Bend in 1936, has the same dark preservation as the Metasqualodon and Hexanchus teeth, and other shark teeth from reducing sediments, and adds support for the provenance of Metasqualodon being the Ettrick Formation." (Pledge & Rothausen, 1977). Associated plankton include Turborotalia euapertura, Guembelitria triseriata and Chiloguembelina cubensis, suggesting a Late Oligocene (P21 Zone) age (Gallagher & Gourley, 2007). Metasqualodon teeth likely came from the upper part of the unit (Pledge & Rothausen, 1977).
