Also known as Argyrosaurus type, Pampa Pelada
Where: Chubut, Argentina (45.5° S, 69.2° W: paleocoordinates 48.0° S, 55.9° W)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• small collection-level geographic resolution
When: Lago Colhué Huapi Formation (Chubut Group), Campanian to Campanian (83.6 - 66.0 Ma)
• supposedly 100 m below the "Notostylops beds"; sometimes listed as Castillo Fm.
•
•Probably upper member of the Bajo Barreal Formation, Chubut Group (Bonaparte and Gasparini, 1979); Campanian–?Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) (Casal et al., 2007). Based on outcrops in the western part of the San Jorge Basin, the Bajo Barreal Formation is generally considered middle Cenomanian–Turonian in age (Bridge et al., 2000; Lamanna et al., 2002); however, recent evidence indicates that the more easterly exposures in the less well-studied Rio Chico area are much younger, i.e., Campanian–?Maastrichtian (Casal et al., 2007) (Mannion and Otero, 2012).
• bed-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: terrestrial; lithology not reported
Size class: macrofossils
Collected by C. Ameghino in 1889; reposited in the MLP
Collection methods: quarrying, surface (in situ), mechanical,
• This is probably the same area prospected by the FMNH but no collections were made; they found evidence of prior work, including tools from Sheffield, England and ordered piles of dinosaur bones. The forelimb of Argyrosaurus seems to have come from a fairly complete skeleton that was not entirely excavated.
