When: Xintianmen Formation, Late/Upper Hettangian to Late/Upper Hettangian (201.3 - 189.6 Ma)

• Horizon B belongs to the lower Xintianmen Formation, either to late Hettangian or early Sinemurian deposits. The Xintianmen Formation mainly is of early Sinemurian age but probably comprises late Hettangian deposits in its lower part... It seems probable that the assemblage of horizon A and possibly also that of horizon B are of (late) Hettangian age and that the lower Xintianmen Formation comprises late Hettangian to early Sinemurian deposits.

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; lithified mudstone

• This succession of the Xintianmen Formation consists of shallow-marine, siliciclastic deposits. Frequent occurence of lenticular beddings and ripples of different kinds in the mudstones, as well as sandstone layers overlying erosional surfaces indicate that the deposition took place above the storm wave base, probably in near-shore environments. The latter is also indicated by the frequent occurence of remains of land plants.
• In the Xintianmen Formation, well layered sandstones and mudstones alternate. Marine invertebrates occur in a few horizons only, in mudstones as well as sandstones. The horizon B consists of dark grey mudstones containing some lighter portions and sometimes yield pyritic nodules.
