Fauna from the Peters Switch Bed of the Clegg Creek Member, New Albany Shale (Up (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Indiana (38.7° N, 85.7° W: paleocoordinates 27.0° S, 33.9° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: To VI zone, Clegg Creek Member (New Albany Shale Formation), Kinderhookian (358.9 - 352.0 Ma)

• The faunal zone "To VI" refers to the German Upper Devonian and is based on conodonts and ammonites. The Peters Switch bed contains no conodonts, but its brachiopod fauna is similar to that of the Upper Devonian Louisiana Limestone of Missouri which has conodonts and belongs to Zone To VI. The Peters Switch occurs 7.0 feet below the top of the member. This member includes the lower part of the upper part of the Blackiston Formation of Campbell and his Sanderson, Underwood, and Henryville Formations.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; black, green, calcareous shale

• The New Albany Shale in Indiana was deposited in a shallow marine environment under reducing conditions that were caused by lack of water circulation.
• calcareous greenish-gray shale 2.0 feet thick; the bed is overlain by dark brownish-black, fissile shale; the clegg creek contains some visible quartz silt and dolomite laminae are present

Collection methods: faunal data includes information compiled from Kindle, 1901; Huddle, 1933; and Campbell, 1946 in addition to field collections.
