Alpena Bed 1 Surface Collection 3 (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Carroll County, Arkansas (36.3° N, 93.2° W: paleocoordinates 12.2° S, 34.8° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Hindsville Formation, Chesterian (335.5 - 323.2 Ma)

• The Hindsville formation is the lowermost Chesterian unit in northern Arkansas and unconformably overlies the Meramecian Boone Formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified packstone

• Dark, brittle bioclastic packstone with abundant brachiopods and pyrite.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected by N. A. Heim in 2004

Collection methods: bulk, sieve,

• Approximately 1 gallon of weathered sediments were collected from the surface and processed through a 1 mm sieve and all brachiopods were picked and identified to the genus level.
