Where: Peru (14.7° S, 75.5° W: paleocoordinates 15.4° S, 72.3° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Pisco Formation, Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Pisco Fm, which regionally, unconformably overlies the Chilcatay Fm (late Oligocene-early Middle Miocene). AGE: early Middle Miocene to Late Pliocene on the basis of K/Ar dates, siliceous microfossil zonation, and molluscan biostratigraphy supports. Stated in text to be of Middle Miocene age. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From unknown position within section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not discussed in text, but appears to be from relatively shallow marine siliciclastic setting. High productivity, but also warmer than at the present day in the Peruvian upwelling zone.
