When: Herkimer Formation (Clinton Group), Sheinwoodian (432.9 - 430.6 Ma)

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; lithified, brown, gray sandstone and lithified, gray, blue shale

• Brownish gray sandstone with an abundance of blueish gray shale layers. Most standstone layers are thin. Some have mudcracks, some bear the so-called plants. No continental sandstone discovered. Most of the fossils occur in the sandstones and are preserved as casts and molds.
