Sister taxa: Herpetocetus morrowi, Herpetocetus scaldiensis, Herpetocetus sendaicus, Herpetocetus transatlanticus, Mizuhoptera kanayaensis, Mizuhoptera fujinensis

Type specimen: UCMP 82465, a partial skull (left half of a braincase). Its type locality is Opal Cliffs 1, which is in a Messinian/Zanclean open shallow subtidal sandstone in the Purisima Formation of California.
