Type specimens:

  • Ichthyornis dispar: YPM 1450, a partial skeleton (vertebrae, wings and legs). Its type locality is Bow Creek; Sugar Bowl Mound, which is in a Santonian marine chalk in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.
  • Colonosaurus mudgei: Its type locality is Bow Creek; Sugar Bowl Mound, which is in a Santonian marine chalk in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.
  • Ichthyornis agilis: YPM 1209, a limb element (proximal left carpometacarpus lacking metacarpal I).
  • Ichthyornis anceps: YPM 1208, a limb element (distal end, left metatarsal).
  • Ichthyornis antecessor: USNM 22820, a set of limb elements (left distal humerus). Its type locality is Hewlett Farm, which is in a Santonian/Campanian carbonate limestone in the Mooreville Chalk Formation of Alabama.
  • Ichthyornis validus: YPM 1740, a limb element (right ulna).
  • Ichthyornis victor: YPM 1452, a set of limb elements (proximal right coracoid, proximal right scapula, and three fragments of a poorly preserved left humerus).

Ecology: volant piscivore

Distribution:

• Cretaceous of Mexico (1 collection), United States (24: Alabama, Kansas, Texas)
