Sister taxa: Smilosuchus adamanensis, Smilosuchus lithodendrorum

Type specimen: UCMP A272/27200, a skull (Complete skull, eight vertebrae, femur and three dermal scutes). Its type locality is Round Rock 2 (UCMP A272), which is in a Norian terrestrial horizon in the Chinle Formation of Arizona.
