Sister taxa: Ptyonius marshii, Ptyonius nummifer, Ptyonius olisthmonaias, Ptyonius serrula, Ptyonius vinchellianus
Type specimen: AMNH 6862, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Linton, which is in a Westphalian D mire/swamp coal in Ohio.
