Sister taxa: Osteopygis backmani, Osteopygis emarginatus, Osteopygis kranzi, Osteopygis russelli

Type specimen: AMNH 1485. Its type locality is Barnsboro "greensand" (Hornerstown), which is in a Maastrichtian marginal marine horizon in the Hornerstown Formation of New Jersey.
