Sister taxa: Machimosaurus buffetauti, Machimosaurus hugii, Machimosaurus nowackianus, Machimosaurus rex
Type specimen: BHN 2R 1100 (neotype). Its type locality is Verdun, which is in a Kimmeridgian marine mudstone in the Marnes a Gryphées virgules d'Issoncourt Formation of France.
