Type specimens:

  • Kestrosaurus dreyeri: SAM-PK-3452, a skull. Its type locality is Farm Harmonia, Senekal, which is in a Spathian terrestrial sandstone in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.
  • Capitosaurus haughtoni: BSP 1934 VIII 50, a partial skull. Its type locality is Kaaimansgat 146, which is in an Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.
