Sister taxa: Mazonia acadica, Mazonia wardingleyi

Type specimen: UI X-491, an exoskeleton. Its type locality is Mazon Creek (University of Illinois collection), which is in a Westphalian D deltaic mudstone in the Carbondale Formation of Illinois.
