Sister taxa: Thalattosaurus borealis, Thalattosaurus perrini, Thalattosaurus shastensis

Type specimen: UCMP 9085, a partial skeleton (Preorbital part of skull, incomplete left and right dentary, right pterygoid, humerus, coracoid, pubis, isolated limb bones, six sections of articulated vertebr). Its type locality is UCMP 1013, West end of Bear Cove, which is in a Tuvalian carbonate limestone in the Hosselkus Formation of California.

Distribution: found only at UCMP 1013, West end of Bear Cove
