Sister taxa: Lontra canadensis, Lontra felina, Lontra longicaudis, Lontra provocax

Type specimen: IMNH 38647, a mandible (right dentary with c-m1). Its type locality is Hagerman (HAFO Locality 068 = IMNH Locality 85005), which is in a Pliocene floodplain horizon in the Glenns Ferry Formation of Idaho.

Ecology: amphibious carnivore-omnivore
