Type specimens:

  • Protocyrtus mongolicus: PIN 3149/948, a forewing. Its type locality is Gurvan-Ereny-Nuruu (Outcrop 236/29), which is in an Aptian lacustrine - large shale/sandstone in the Gurvan-Eren Formation of Mongolia.
  • Protocyrtus validus: NIGP 132114, an exoskeleton. Its type locality is Jianshangou, Beipiao City (NIGP coll), which is in a Barremian lacustrine - large mudstone in the Yixian Formation of China.
