Type specimens:
- Mylodon darwini: NHMUK M-16617, a mandible. Its type locality is Punta Alta (visited by Darwin during the HMS Beagle voyage), which is in a Lujanian terrestrial conglomerate in Argentina.
- Gnathopsis oweni:
