Type specimens:
- Mylodon darwini: NHMUK M-16617, a mandible. Its type locality is Punta Alta (visited by Darwin during the HMS Beagle voyage), which is in a Lujanian terrestrial conglomerate in Argentina.
- Gnathopsis oweni:
Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore
Distribution:
• Quaternary of Argentina (12 collections), Bolivia (3), Brazil (1), Chile (1), Uruguay (1)
• Oligocene of Argentina (1)
