Derivation of name. Terato-, from the genitive of the ancient Greek word , which means 'monster', in reference to the strange configuration of the ectoloph of the premolars and in memorial of G. G. Simpsons assessment of this peculiar structure as a teratological feature. Pithecus, in ancient Greek , which means ape and has been the common suffix used for Archaeopithecidae.
