Sister taxon: Plesiobalaenoptera quarantellii

Type specimen: MB Ma 28570, a skeleton (nearly complete skeleton with damaged portions of cranium, rostrum, and mandibles, and associated axial skeleton and pectoral elements). Its type locality is Bahia de Guayacan, which is in a Zanclean slope horizon in the Coquimbo Formation of Chile.
