Sister taxa: Lophionotus chinleana, Lophionotus kanabensis
Type specimen: AMNH 5680, a skeleton. Its type locality is Little Valley fish locality, which is in a Norian/Rhaetian channel siltstone in the Chinle Formation of Utah.
