Sister taxon: Gymnammodytes arnoldmuelleri

Type specimen: MNHN ORA1203 d+g; ORA1203, a partial skeleton ( fragmentary specimen with a well preserved skull; most of the axial skeleton is missing). Its type locality is Tripoli of Gambetta, which is in a Messinian marine limestone in Algeria.
