Etymologydedicated to the Puelche people, who inhabited the south of Mendoza Province.

Sister taxa: Asteromys bolivianus, Asteromys punctus
Type specimen: MCNAM-PV 4072, a mandible. Its type locality is Quebrada Fiera, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal tuff in the Agua de la Piedra Formation of Argentina.
Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore
Distribution: found only at Quebrada Fiera
