Sister taxa: Pelonax potens, Pelonax ramosus

Type specimen: SDSM 2423, a mandible (Mandibular rami lacking posterior portion, with right p3-m1, alveoli of canine and p1-2 and left p2-m3, alveoli of p1 and canine.). Its type locality is Cedar Pass (Protoceras Beds), which is in a Whitneyan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of South Dakota.

Ecology: ground dwelling omnivore

Distribution: found only at Cedar Pass (Protoceras Beds)
