Sister taxa: Mentzichthys maraisi, Mentzichthys theroni, Mentzichthys walshi

Type specimen: Geological Survey of South Africa, Pretoria, a partial skeleton (a tolerably complete fish with tail and tip of the snout missing). Its type locality is Schiethoogte 279, which is in a Tournaisian lacustrine - large mudstone/marl in the Waaiport Formation of South Africa.

Ecology: nektonic carnivore

Distribution: found only at Schiethoogte 279
