Type specimens:

  • Mesogaulus paniensis: AMNH 9361, a mandible. Its type locality is Courthouse Butte, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial horizon in the Pawnee Creek Formation of Colorado.
  • Mesogaulus praecursor: Its type locality is Agate (4 Miles N), which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Marsland Formation of Nebraska.

Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore

Distribution:

• Miocene of Canada (1: Saskatchewan collection), United States (9: Colorado, Nebraska)

• Harrisonian of United States (1: Nebraska)
