Lyginopteridopsida - Lyginopteridales
The name Sphenopteris was first validly published by Brongniart (1822: 233) for a section of the fossil-genus Filicites Schloth. ex Brongn. (Brongniart, 1822). The taxon was shortly afterwards raised in rank to genus by Sternberg (1825) but who illegitimately altered the spelling to Sphaenopteris. Brongniart (1828a,b) accepted the change in rank but reverted to the original spelling, Sphenopteris (see also Sternberg, 1833), and this is how the name is normally used today.
