Type specimens:
- Eucnemesaurus fortis: TrM 119, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is farm Zonderhout (291), Slabberts (zone A/5), which is in a Norian/Rhaetian terrestrial mudstone in the Elliot Formation of South Africa.
- Aliwalia rex: NMW 1886-XV-39, 1876-VII-B124. Its type locality is Barnard's Spruit, Aliwal North (zone A/5), which is in a Norian/Rhaetian terrestrial horizon in the Elliot Formation of South Africa.
