Type specimen: ARA-VP-6/1, a set of teeth (associated set of teeth that includes upper left I1, C, P3, P4, right I1, C (broken), P4, M2, and lower right P3 and P4). Its type locality is Middle Awash - Aramis mbr., which is in a Zanclean fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Sagantole Formation of Ethiopia.
