Hallebune was named by Erfurt and Sudre (1995). It is not extant. Its type is Hallebune krumbiegeli.

It was assigned to Haplobunodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Choeropotamidae by Sudre and Lecomte (2000), Erfurt and Metais (2007).
