Vultur aura was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Cathartes.
It was recombined as Cathartes aura by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1931), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Hamon (1959), Campbell (1976), Amadon (1977), Olson et al. (1990), Steadman et al. (2003), Broughton (2004), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017).
