Orthotetacea was named by Waagen (1884) [Nom. transl. Williams, 1953(p 9) from Orthotetinae Waagen, 1884].

It was corrected as Orthotetoidea by Williams et al. (2000), Shen et al. (2000), Musteikis and Cocks (2004).

It was assigned to Strophomenoidea by Boucot and Johnson (1964); to Orthotetidina by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Shen et al. (2000); and to Orthotetida by Musteikis and Cocks (2004).
