Chelyconus was named by Mörch (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. Its type is Conus testudinarius.

It was reranked as Conus (Cheliconus) by Toula (1911); it was reranked as Conus (Chelyconus) by Cossmann (1913), Woodring (1928), Abrard (1946), Addicott (1970), Marasti (1973); it was reranked as Conus (Chelyoconus) by Mandic and Steininger (2003).
