Pyrene was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pyrenidae by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); to Pyreninae by Wilson (1994); to Columbellidae by MacNeil (1960), Ladd (1977), Harzhauser (2002); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
