Fossaridae was named by Adams (1860) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5396]. It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Planaxidae by Jeffery (2003); it was reranked as the subfamily Fossarinae by Bouchet et al. (2005), Bouchet et al. (2017).
It was assigned to Taenioglossa by Martin (1904); to Cerithioidea by Ponder and Warén (1988); to Caenogastropoda by Wienrich (2001); and to Planaxidae by Bouchet et al. (2005), Bouchet et al. (2017).
