Taxonomy
Stegochiton onerosus was named by Hoare and Smith (1984). Its type specimen is USNM 330888, a valve (Intermediate valve), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is USNM709d, Hess Ranch, Glass Mountains, which is in a Kungurian carbonate limestone in the Hess Formation of Texas.
