Ammonites exoticus was named by Oppel (1863). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Lytoceras exoticum by Uhlig (1903); it was recombined as Pterolytoceras exoticum by Helmstaedt (1969); it was recombined as Pterolytoceras exoticus by Wright et al. (1996).
