Renites was named by Bogoslovsky (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. Its type is Renites kiensis.

It was assigned to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prolobitinae by Korn (2006).
